I noticed this newly built terminal while driving into the city of Phuket. It is situated approximately 5kms north of the city, along the major highway Thep Krasattri.
My taxi driver informed me that, while it will not be in operation for another two months (May/June 2011) it is complete and ready to go. In design the station has a large admin area, facing out onto the main road, behind is a long set of bus bays surrounding a covered waiting area.
If Phuket follows the usual division of other provinces with two terminals, the new and larger will handle inter-provincial traffic, while the older and smaller will handle locale traffic. This is not a bad idea, the old terminal is located in the middle of the city, if the larger buses were to avoid the city there will be less congestion. Of course, this does open the inexperienced traveller to the mercies of the local taxi drivers. I would estimate 100 baht ($3) would be a reasonable fee to be conveyed to the city centre.
No doubt this new terminal is 'efficient', but it entirely lacks the charm of the traditional Thai bus station: worn, noisy, dusty, and full of hustle and bustle.
