The original Allan Herschell Company specialized in the manufacture of amusement rides, mostly roller coasters and carousels made of simple carvings of horses. The company began in 1873 with Allan Herschell and James Armitage as founders and operated until the early 1900s.

Allan Herschell was also involved in the manufacture of carousels with his in-laws, in another company, called the Herschell Spillman Company, which created larger park machines, with more elaborate carvings and and a wider variety of animals than the original Allan Hershell Company.

In time, the second company dropped the "Hershell" name and was known simply as the Spillman Engineering Company, which continued to make the same style of carousel, although it focused more on horses with a fewer menagerie styled carousels.

In 1915, Herschell created yet another company that was in competition with the Spillman Engineering Company. In this venture, Herschell specialized in portable machines, and the horses had rigid poses, that were easily packed and shipped between towns, for traveling amusement shows.

In all, Herschell produced over 3,000 carved wooden carousels, which were shipped and used all over the United States, Mexico, South Africa, and India and Canada.

The carousel is now part of the Santa Barbara City park system and is open at various times throughout the year and can be rented for special events. Visit this website for additional information on times/uses of the carousel: (visit link)
