Auschwitz II-Birkenau was a concentration and extermination camp, integrated in the Auschwitz network of camps.
Auschwitz was the largest German concentration camp, and was formed mainly by 3 different camps: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau and Auschwitz III-Monowitz, also known as Buna-Monowitz (a labor camp).
Auschwitz II-Birkenau construction started in October 1941, because of the congestion in the main camp, Auschwitz I. This camp was much larger than Auschwitz I, and many more people were kept prisoners in it.
