Pedro Menendez de Aviles: The Person, His Deeds, His Times.
This theme was the challenge issued for the 7th San Agustin Ceramic Event, an annual ceramic competition held by the City of Aviles, Spain. Thirty-three artists from the region of Asturias including teachers and students of the Municipal Ceramics School of Aviles and nearly all members of the Ceramic Group of Asturias responded by creating individual tiles utilizing diverse techniques and styles.
The tiles were shipped to St. Augustine and the mural assembled by skilled crews of the City of St. Augustine's Public Works Department under the artistic direction of Ramon Rodriguez, Director of the Municipal Ceramics School of Aviles.
The completed mural was unveiled and officially presented to the City of St. Augustine by its sister city, the City of Aviles, Spain on February 22, 2002.
