The town hall was originally designed without a tower. However civic pride on behalf of the council led to the tower being added later. The town hall was opened in 1858 by Queen Victoria, whilst the tower was still being built. It was finally completed in 1859.
The tower is 225 feet high and was the tallest building in Leeds until 1966.
The bell is 6ft 2ins in diameter and weighs 4 tons 1 cwt
The inscription on the soundbow of the bell reads:
This bell weighing 4ton 1cwt 0qrs 1lbs was cast by John Warner and sons for the Town Hall of Leeds in the year of our Lord 1859. Cuthbert Brodrick. It was not actually hung until 1860.
Its dimensions are: Diameter 6ft 2ins, height 5ft, thickness of sound bow 6 inches, and weight of the clapper (which is of wrought iron) 1cwt. The cost of the bell was £662.12s
The bell also had a portrait of Queen Victoria attached to the side of the bell. Apparently this has rusted away to virtually nothing, but her name can clearly be read beneath it.
