In 1660 the old chapel had turned non-conformist when the Congregational Reverend Thomas Smallwood became minister. However he had to leave after the Act of Uniformity in 1662. This act of parliament laid down the rites and styles of service in Established Churches of England. The Chapel reverted to the Church of England in 1689.
The current Anglican church was built using funds raised by public subscription after the defeat of Napolean Bonepart at the battle of Waterloo. It was finished in 1830 complete with a bell tower. However there was not enough money for any bells until 1914 when a peal of 8 bells was installed.
