The current White Bird Grade was completed in 1975 following10 years of construction. This overlook provides an overview view of the White Bird Battlefield and a view of the historic old White Bird Grade.
On June 17, 1877, the first battle of the Nez Perce War was fought here. The U.S. cavalry was defeated with heavy losses and the Nez Perce began their long journey to find safety and sanctuary. There’s an interpretive shelter here with signs describing the Nez Perce War.
Also visible from here is a major section of the historic White Bird Grade which was completed in 1915. An Idaho Historical Marker gives information about the old grade. The Grade was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
