The post office in Sentinel is located at 312 E. Main Street in this town of approximately 890 residents.

The area was opened for non-Indian settlement in the Cheyenne and Arapaho Land Run of 1892. A small general store was opened in 1898, and a post office established there on March 6, 1899. The post office was designated as Sentinel, named after the town of Cloud Chief's newspaper, the Herald-Sentinel.

In 1901 the railroad purchased land nearby and named the area Barton. The general store and post office moved to that location to be near the railroad, but there was confusion because the town and the post office had different names. In 1907, the town officially became Sentinel.
