Kratie (pronounced 'Crac-che', or something similar—difficult for a westerner) is the capital of the Cambodian province of the same name, approximately 150 kms north east of Phnom Penh. Kratie is famous (to a certain extent) for its fresh water dolphins, which are the main tourist attraction of the province. Directly across from Kratie town is Koh (island) Trong, which has a number of lesser tourist attractions (tourist map of island in gallery).

To reach this island from Kratie involves a trip on a small ferry boat (~5m long) across the waters of the Mekong River. Your will embark from the town's small jetty, which is next to the town's small bus station, on a ~1.5km, somewhat circuitous route (avoiding floating debris and cross currents). After 20 minutes or so you will reach Trong island. The island is inhabited, largely by rice farmers, with a small village facing Kratie town.

The boat operates during the daylight hours, when the Mekong is not in flood, and when people are waiting for the service, and not when the boat driver is enjoying a smoke with his mates on either shore. Expect to share your trip with all manner of items and livestock. The trip across costs us10c, and there is no gift shop on board.
