A multitude of impressive wind turbines spin over miles of farmland just to the northwest of Storm Lake, IA. This wind farm is thought to be one of the largest wind farms in the world. Perhaps they lack the charm of the traditional windmills which decorate the Dutch communities like Pella and Orange City, but they are strikingly beautiful to those benefiting from the electricity they generate.

A self-guided tour extends about 35 miles through country roads where nearly 385 three-bladed towers, most of them lattice style, capture wind to drive electric generators, providing electricity to more than 114,000 homes. Besides providing clean, affordable electricity and generating abundant job opportunities, the towers have become a tourist attraction as well.
