The railway station of Riehen was built in 1862 as part of the Wiesentalbahn from Schopfheim to Basel Bad. Bahnhof. In 2003 the line was extended to the station Basel SBB and it became part of the Basel commuter train system with the line number S6. There is a train every 30 minutes to and from Basel.

This railway station is in the Swiss town Riehen, but the rails are owned by German DB. The next station in the North is the German city Lörrach, in the South it is Basel, but the station "Badischer Bahnhof" which is German territory inside a Swiss city, and then the Swiss railway station. So it is not very clear when you need a passport and when not. You can drive from the first to the third station without leaving Switzerland, and you can drive from the second to the fourth station (crossing Riehen) without leaving Germany. To make things more complicated the line is operated by the German subsidiary of Swiss Federal Rail using Swiss hardware.
