The town of Rush Springs, in Grady County, is 65 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, at the intersection of state highways 81 and 17, and has about 1500 residents. This welcome sign is out on Highway 81, just before you turn off to enter the town.
The sign says Rush Springs is a small town with a big heart, and that is true. We just attended the Rush Springs high school alumni reunion last summer, and saw so many of those big hearts.
Rush Springs used to have its town saying: "Rush Springs - 1500 good folks and one old sorehead" but I guess they've changed their motto.
Rush Springs was settled in the late 1800s. It is so called because of the large Rush spring located within the park, on Rush Creek. This area was a camping place for Indian tribes in the early 1800s. The famous Chisholm Trail over which cowboys drove cattle from Texas through Oklahoma to the railheads in Kansas, is located about 1-1/2 miles east of Rush Springs, and the springs were a common watering hole for these cattle drives.
Each summer in August, Rush Springs, the "Watermelon Capital of the World" has a huge Watermelon Festival with rides, craft booths and entertainment, seed spitting contests, and lots of watermelon to eat. It attracts tens of thousands of people.
