"In 1996 the Dalmation Pioneer Trust commissioned West-Aucklander Lynn Dunn, a woodcarver with 25 years experience, to create a 2-meter tall wooden carving of a pioneer gumdigger. From this carving a bronze statue was to be made and erected in a prominent position in Dargaville."
The plaque reads:-
This statur was erected by the Dalmation Pioneer Trust as a tribute to the early gumdiggers of the Kaipara District.
Unveiled on the 8th March 1997 by his Worship the Mayor Mr P.A. Brown M.B.E,
