Located outside the entrance of the city cemetery, the statue was erected in 1967, by the readers of the newspaper Il Tempo.

He died in 1958. He is most known for being the pontiff during a very difficult period, during which in the period of eight months, the city of Rome was occupied by a foreign army between 1943 and 1944, and almost three thousand citizens, mostly jewish, were deported to concentration camps in Eastern Europe.
