Lewis Gilliam home site near Copper Creek in Scott County, Virginia - Remains of Settlements on Waymarking.com

This is all that remains of a settlement that was once a small community in the remote mountains of Scott County, Virginia. This home was once owned by Lewis Gilliam, a desendant of the early pioneer settlers in the area. The chimney has two fireplaces, and was a small two story dwelling. The upper rooms were more of just lofts with a ladder leading up to them. Some of the other familys that lived in this area were the Akers, Bellamy, McConnell, McDavid, Pierson, Pendelton and Speers. Not far from here are two cemeterys, the older one is known as the Lewis Gilliam cemetery and is only marked by field stones. It is located on a small knoll and is said to have been a Native American burial mound, which could be true as it is a mound that contains about thirty marked graves. The smaller cemetery is about fifty yards away and has more modern headstones with the names of some of the McConnell family and one C.S.A. grave marker with the name of William S. Gilliam, Pvt Co K4 Cav, Mar 1822 - Feb 1909.
