Built in 1893, the Whipple Company Store was the main retail business for the surrounding coal company town of Whipple WV. Miner's families would have purchased almost all necessities of life from the company store, usually using coal company "scrip" (note--not script, as is often mistakenly written)--coinage minted and used by the coal company and designed so that the miner and his family were unable to purchase outside the closed economic system of the coal company.
The Whipple Company Store is the last building of its design still surviving and is a privately owned and operated history museum open during the spring, summer and fall months.
