Laguna Gloria is the former estate of Henry and Clara Sevier and is reputed to have also been property owned by Steven F Austin. Mrs. Clara Sevier is better known as Clara Driscoll, the "Savior of the Alamo" and as a banker, land manager, politician and philanthropist to the fine arts. This estate at Laguna Gloria was her home for much of her life and certainly befits her high society life. The landscaped gardens surrounding the main mansion still contains the statuary and the this bell that has been on the property at least since being mentioned in the American Guide Series for Texas in 1940. The bell is mounted in the arch of a freestanding archway leading from the front side-yard of the house into other wooded areas of the property. It was probably used to announce guests arrival by boat since it is near the overlook onto the Colorado River from the highest terrace of the property. Of course it could also announce that the food was ready to serve for the many large parties hosted at Laguna Gloria. The bell was manufactured by the U.S. Steel Company. It can be touched by someone tall enough when they are standing in the archway. The clapper has been removed and the pivots have been wired to prevent the bell from being rung.
