King Taksin (reign: 1768-1782) came to power after central Siam (Thailand as it was then called) had been overrun by the Burmese. He withdrew to south eastern Thailand and rebuilt the Siamese army and then successfully counter attacked, freeing Siam from Burmese control. He then went on to invade Burma, and then neighbouring Laos and Cambodia.
The town of Trat lies in south eastern Thailand, and as with all towns and provinces in this region, King Taksin is well remembered in popular culture and iconography. Wat Bod is the oldest Wat in the province of Trat, and in the Wat grounds is an equestrian statue of the king. The statue is clearly aged, but no date is given. The statue sits in an open area, and I suspect it would be commemorated during annual cultural events.
