The General Francis Marion Hotel opened to guest on May 27, 1927, and officially dedicated on June 8, 1927. The elegant hotel is named for Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion, for whom the town of Marion is named. The Hotel was built by Charles Clarke Lincoln and Dr. William M. Sclater, both prominent and wealthy residents of Marion. Both men realized very early that travelers along Route 11 would require lodging and having an elegant place to stay would only increase the potential for commercial growth throughout the area. In 1928, Mr. Lincoln decided to change the name of the General Francis Marion to the Hotel Lincoln. Joe and Susie Ellis, bought the Hotel Lincoln in 2000 and began a restoration project that was completed in 2006. Today the Hotel Lincoln is once again known as The General Francis Marion Hotel and is open to the public for both elegant dining and overnight lodging.
