Pico Ruivo is the highest peak in the volcanic island of Madeira. As you would expect, there is a triangulation mark at the summit.

As the highest point on Madeira, Pico Ruivo at 1862 m, 6105 ft, attracts a lot of visitors. Unfortunately all the routes have been officialy closed since 23 Sept 2010 due to the torrential floods in Feb 2010 and fires in August 2010. Some like the route fron Pico Arieriro are closed more firmly than others, like the hike from Achada do Teixeira. This is a moderate hike and the minor closure warning was ignored by most hikers including us. The risks from unstable terrain and rockfalls was non-existant on this easy back route to Pico Ruivo. Yes, the floods and fires were devastating by nature heals such wounds.
At the summit the old summit cairn and the triangulation marker are prominant. The old wooden guard rails seen in the Google Maps images were all burned away leaving an interesting deposit of fasteners ranging from old square, hand made, nails to modern screw fasteners. As expected the views are spectacular. But they are difficult to capture in photos as we were looking into the sun. Return at dawn or sunset? Perhaps, but in another lifetime.
