The Fox is usually a reference to fox hunting. It was once a fairly widespread sign, but as towns and cities have expanded and the past time retreated into history bit by bit, the sign is not as popular.
The fox is normally portrayed in a bad light, as a sly creature rather than a noble one.
This sign is very faded and in poor condition. On the plus side, it does seem to portray Steeple Morden's church in the background. There is also a stone sign on the wall of the house, carved in relief.
