Between 1859 and 1861 the British Royal Engineers helped survey the Canadian-American border from the Strait of Georgia to the Rocky Mountains. Traversing some of the most difficult terrain to establish a line in the forest, the Royal Engineers occasionally wandered off the mark such as in this case where the border is a few hundred metres north of the 49th parallel.
