John Scott Haldane was a physiologist at Oxford. He became known for his contributions to the study of respiration and gases, often conduction experiments on himself.  He had great contributions to the the mining industry in the understanding of carbon monoxide and was an early advocate of the use of canaries in mines as an early warning of the presence of carbon monoxide. He also discovered that "bend" were caused by nitrogen bubbles in the blood and he developed the Haldane Tables for decompression for divers, a version of these tables continue in use today. He was awarded the Fellow of the Royal Society in 1897 and n 1928 he was made Companion of Honour for scientific work in connection with industrial diseases.
