A small community in Union County, South Dakota, Jefferson has a population of 618, as of July 2009. This shows a 5% increase in population from the 2000 census.
The area was settled by German, Irish, French, Norwegian, and English immigrants and the town itself was incorporated on January 8, 1895.
Jefferson is located just off Interstate 29 about an hour south of Sioux Falls, SD, and about 30 minutes north of Sioux City, IA.
This waymark is in the city park, just off State Highway 105.
A plaque is on the marker with the following inscription: "Time Capsule Buried by Mayor Joe Bogenreif Chairman Greg Gagner to be opened July 2034. Plaque in memory of Dan McKelvey".
