An air of mystery surrounds the small bluestone enclosed graveyard at the Werribee Park Golf Club.
Sitting peacefully above the flats of the Werribee River, buggy-trailing golfers are about the only people who ever visit the 125 year old site: usually in search of stray golf balls after slicing near the 16th tee.
Every so often, however, a tourists from Werribee Park will brave the flying white missiles to poke a curious nose into the stone enclosure.
They find two headstones bearing the names of Patrick Logen Edgar and John L. Hamilton.
Edgar died at the age of 26 on May 15 1858, Hamilton drowned in the Werribee River, aged 50, on March 15 1863..
The inscriptions on the weatherworn headstones have become difficult to read.
One had been broken but is now cemented together. It is usually kept elsewhere.
Historians believe a third body is interred within the graveyard but the whereabouts of an accompanying headstone is unknown.
Similarly, the name of the person believed buried there is uncertain although the surname Cosgan could be correct.
Little is known of Edgar and Hamilton.
