The church in Pirbright is at least 800 years old with the first recorded chapel being built 1210-1214, during the reign of King John. By 1783 the ancient church had become very dilapidated. The village of Pirbright was very poor and could not afford to build a new church. The village people met at the local pub and decided to seek permission to have a public subscription to rebuild a new church. By coincidence King George III was travelling through Pirbright around this time and his coach overturned, the village people rescued him and provided him aid while his coach was repaired. As a measure of his gratitude he issued a petition for all the churches in England to contribute to the rebuilding of Pirbright Church. The old building was removed in 1785 and a new building was built in its place. The building was expanded in with a community room with modern facilities in 1992. The building continues to serve its congregation and the village of Pirbright.
