St Flannan's Cathedral was built between 1195 and 1225. The cathedral was built during the transitional period between Romanesque and Gothic periods. It is mostly Gothic in style however does exhibit some features reflecting the earlier style. The cathedral was the cathedral of the Diocese of Killaloe , it is now one of three cathedrals in the United Dioceses of Limerick and Killaloe. Some rebuilding work was done on the cathedral during the 19th century with major restorative work does in the 1960s and again in the 1990s.

The cathedral has some interesting artifacts displayed in it nave including a 12th century stone carved The Romanesque doorway, a Ogham stone dating to about 1000 A.D. featuring inscriptions in both Runic and Ogham languages, and a 12th century stone high cross.
