On September 30, 1882, the Henry J. Rogers House became the first residence in the world powered by a centrally located hydroelectric station using the Edison system.

"This residence was built by Appleton financier and
industrialist H.J. Rogers. Rogers, owner of a paper mill,
became interested in Edison’s experiments with electricity. He
purchased the Edison patent-license rights for the Fox Valley
even before he had seen electrical power in action! He brought
a Western Edison Light Company engineer to Appleton, built a
plant, and had two Edison Type “K” dynamos installed. One
generator was connected with the water wheels at Rogers
paper mill, while the other was connected with the home
Rogers was constructing at the time and had wired for
electricity. The first attempt on September 27, 1882 failed to
produce electricity, but a second attempt three days later
caused the home and mill to light up “bright as day.” This is
the first home in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity."
