This rare, woodland habitat is formed by oaks over 700 years old. The area is known as 'The Oaks' today but was known as 'Sterley Bushes'. There is a lot of rotting wood providing the perfect habitat for rare beetles and fungi.

The ancient oak trees found here have reached maturity and their fallen branches have naturally been allowed to rot. Some of the wonders found here are the Oak Polpore and the beetle Sphaerites glabratus, which are very rare.

The area is carefully managed by The National Trust and this sign is supplied by them.
