Dorset County Council was formed in 1889 and it was then that a seal was created. It uses three lions from the Dorchester seal and these are reflected in the coat of arms.
Just after World War II the County Council applied for a coat of arms from the College of Arms; this was granted on 21st February 1950.
The one we see here is on County Hall which is tucked around the back of the main high streets in Dorchester.

Blazon (heraldic description): Three lions passant appear on this coat of arms. These are also notable on the arms of Dorchester, Bridport, Lyme Regis, Weymouth and Blandford Forum.
Above the shield is the mural crown. This reflects the the Dorset Regiment and the Society of Dorset Men. The dragon (usually golden) represents Wessex.
There is an inscripted motto underneath 'Who's afear'd' which was brought into existence from a suggestion by Thomas Hardy and used by the Society of Dorset Men in 1905. It is quoted with the Dorset dialect present from 1908. Colonel C.D. Drew suggested it to Dorset County Council.
