Henry Spencer Moore was born in Castleford, West Yorkshire in 1898. He was the first student at the Leeds School of Art in 1919, where a special sculpture studio was built for him. In 1921he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London.

Henry Moore was an abstract sculptor whose public works are well known throughout the world. The works are usually large undulating sculptures, often pierced by holes, and are of reclining figures. Most of Moore’s works are in bronze or marble.

Moore became wealthy producing public works of art, but lived simply in Perry Green. He used the money to create the Henry Moore Foundation which promotes art and education in art.
