A sign at the trailhead provides the following information:
"The 10 volcanoes trail is a path that is composed by three other short trails (PRC-4-FAI, PR-3-FAI e PR-1-FAI). It starts at Caldeira do Faial viewpoint (t2/PRC-4-FAI) and it goes around about half the perimeter of it, where, to your right, you must take a dirt road - Caminho do Brejo - descending along a forest of diversified vegetation, rich in endemic plants. After walking for about 1h30, you must turn to your left and continue alongside the levada, a water channel built to produce electricity (t4/PR-3-FAI). After passing the tank, located at the end of the levada, you can make a small detour to see the caldera of Cabeço dos Trinta, accessible through a short tunnel. Take the same way back and continue the trail towards Capelo, along a dirt and asphalt road, that goes by a forest park where you can rest a little. Afterwards, you will enter the third short trail that ends at Capelinhos Volcano (t5/PR-1-FAI). It starts by climbing Cabeço Verde, followed by rounding a small caldera and descending a footpath along a forest of endemic vegetation, and passing by Furna Ruim and Caldeirao. Reaching the foot of this volcano, another ascent begins, now in Cabeço do Canto. After reaching the top, the trail goes down towards de Capelinhos lighthouse. This trail ends by performing a walk to the top of the volcano (t6), where, after the ten volcanoes trail is completed, you can rest and visit the Interpretation Centre of Capelinhos Volcano."
