There was a church here before the Normans invaded. There are Saxon cross fragments in the church. The Normans used stone for their buildings and the west door and base of tower are remnants of their handiwork.
The Norman Lord Egremont founded a priory here for 6 monks and a prior in around 1130. The priory was a subsidiary of the main abbey in York. Over the years it gained a great deal of power with land as far a field as Isle of Man.
Henry VIII dissolved the priory and buildings, leaving the nave as the parish church.
Later in 1800s much renovation took place when the Theological College opened in the village. Rare to see one outside of Cambridge. The building we see today owes much of its look to that period.
