This gauge is in two parts on the end of the wharf serving as the West Lynn end of the Lynn Ferry service across the Great Ouse. It is calibrated in meters with every 0.2m marked. The extreme end of the wharf carries the up to 6m portion and the 6m to 10m portion is mounted on a pole erected on the top of the wharf.
The ferry is navigated across the Great Ouse with skill born of long experience, moving upstream against the falling tide and downstream against the rising tide to arrive at the Kings Lynn terminal at the end of Ferry Lane.
