This is one of many granite posts used to mark points on the boundary lines between towns in Massachusetts, in this case, the Town of Hamilton and the Town of Wenham. The letters "H" (for Hamilton) and "W" (for Wenham) are painted on opposite sides. It is approximately eight inches square and three feet high.
This is one of three markers on Fowlers Island in the Great Wenham Swamp. It is the western one, near the northwest corner of the island. To get there, take Woodside Lane west off Pleasant Street and park at the end. Set a waypoint where you park your car, and take a magnetic compass. Bushwhack north about 1/3 mile across the swamp to Fowlers Island, and follow your GPS uphill and then northwest to the marker. Its easy to get lost in here, as the swamp is more than 2,000 acres. It is best done in a dry spell, and when the foliage is off. NOTE: The initial portion of this route is across
private property. Please ask permission before proceeding.
The next adjacent marker heading northwest is
Hamilton-Wenham-Topsfield WM, 0.4 mile.
The next adjacent marker heading southeast is
Hamilton-Wenham 1J, 0.2 mile.
