Repeated flooding millions of years ago with sea water created the excessive salt levels here. Underground water flows through here, comes to the surface, and then evaporates. That brings the salt to the surface. The presence of gypsum helps promote salt crystal growth.
Because the crystals are formed in wet and, the crystals have sand and clay particles in them. Those deposits form hourglass shapes within the crystals. This is the only place in the world that this occurs.
The NWR is open to the public to explore. It is something to see this area!
