The Valparaiso Popcorn Festival began in 1979 as a way to salute Valparaiso, Indiana-native Orville Redenbacher and popcorn. Scheduled annually on the first Saturday after Labor Day, the Valparaiso Popcorn Festival is an all day event held in the downtown area of Valparaiso. I saw Orville in the parking lot of the library. He doesn't sign autographs, but instead hands out "I met Orville" stickers.

Redenbacher was born in Brazil, Indiana, and grew up on his family's farm where he sometimes sold popcorn in wesley town from a roadside stand. After college, he earned a small fortune in fertilizer, but in his spare time, he indulged in his obsession. In 1951, he and partner Charlie Bowman bought the George F. Chester and Son seed corn plant near Valparaiso, Indiana. By the mid 1970s, Redenbacher and Bowman had captured a third of the market for unpopped popcorn.
