At 198m the New Plymouth Power Station chimney was the tallest structure in New Zealand when completed in 1972. It is still the country's tallest chimney - Auckland's Sky Tower (WM550D) completed in 1997 is now New Zealand's Tallest Structure.

The New Plymouth Power Station chimney is the tallest chimney in New Zealand. It contains 16,400 tonnes of concrete, 1200 tonnes of reinforcing steel and almost a million bricks.
The main structure of the chimney is a 90ft diameter reinforced concrete windshield which contains five 11ft diameter flues made of nearly one million bricks, laid at the rate of 10,000 per day, supported by steel platforms at regular intervals throughout the height of the chimney.
Slipforming of the windshield commenced in February 1971 and with only one interruption was completed as a continuous pour at an average rate of 5 inches/hour.
Despite its size, it is designed to sway up to eight centimetres in high wind - and there's plenty of that at its coastal location.
Due to the nature of its construction, the chimney was recognised as a New Zealand Engineering Heritage project as part of the IPENZ “Engineering to 1990” project, to celebrate New Zealand’s sesquicentennial celebrations in 1990.
