The granite obelisk is approximately 30 feet and stands in the city center plaza of Banská Bystrica as a memorial to the Soviet soldiers that died in the area during WWII.
It is possible that it is symbolic of a tomb of an unknown soldier.
The Slovak inscription on the side reads like a poem and is roughly translated as:
Hero
Soviet Army
fallen
for independence
Soviet Union
for the resurrection
Republic of Czechoslovakia
The Russian wording is unknown at this time.
