In the early and middle 20th century, the Venerable Choun Nath (1883-1969), was the leading Cambodian literary and Buddhist figure. His principal literary aim was to preserve and disseminate Cambodian and Buddhist literature. He was also elevated to the position of supreme patriarch of Cambodian Buddhism. In what may have been his greatest contribution, he created a Khmer dictionary. He is still widely remembered and respected in Cambodia.
The statue is located on a traffic roundabout, near the river, and adjacent to the residence of the Buddhist patriarch of Cambodia.
