The town of Kampong Thom is a 'road side' town—a kilometre or two of shops and buildings strung along the main road. This town is also the intersection point of two major Cambodian highways: national highway 6, which runs from the Thai/Cambo border, through the tourist town of Siem Reap, and terminates at the national capital of Phnom Penh, and national highway 64, which runs from the northern border of Cambodia, through a variety of small towns and national parks, to Kampong Thom.
Servicing the public transport needs of the travelling public, is a 'road side' bus station, situated outside the town's major guest house and restaurant. Here buses travelling between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh stop for a rest break, while buses from the north drop off passengers on their way to the big city. While there is no bus station at this point, it is more than a bus stop: tickets are purchased, passengers wait, and buses are serviced.
