The school was set up by Canon Rawnsley, vicar of St Kentigern’s church, to provide classes, initially in metalwork, but later in woodcarving, drawing and design. The impetus for the school came from Rawnsley’s friendship with John Ruskin, a leading light in the Arts and Crafts movement.

The school was originally housed in the church rooms of St Kentigern’s Church, however the school was re-housed in the present location in 1893. Whilst initially the school was purely educational, the success of the school in winning craft commissions led to the school becoming a commercial enterprise. The range of materials was extended into stainless steel in the 1930s. In 1984 the School closed due to increased competition from overseas.

There is an interesting inscription on the front of the building that reads

"The Loving Eye And Patient Hand, Shall Work With Joy and Bless The Land."

Pieces made by the Keswick School of Industrial Art have become very collectible antiques.
