At the north end entrance to the Bexar County Courthouse, a renovated fountain with a new statue of Lady Justice on the top level of a multi-tiered formal fountain was dedicated to the Bexar County legal community by Tracy Wolff, wife of Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, on December 7, 2008. It was part of a multimillion dollar renovation to the entire Main Plaza area of San Antonio. The fountain was purchased by Bexar County from J. L. Mott of New York in 1896 and originally stood on the east side of the courthouse. In 1927, the fountain and the original statue was donated to the city of San Antonio and was moved to the San Antonio Water System pump station park on Market Street. Then, in 1997 the fountain was vandalized and damaged but the original statue was completely destroyed beyond repair. In 2003, local sculpture Gilbert Barrera was commissioned to restore the damaged fountain and to create a new statue for its top. This lead to the creation of the 4 foot tall Lady Liberty statue. Modeled as the Roman goddess Justitia, the Lady is blindfolded to represent impartiality, holds the scales of justice to represent that justice weights each side of a legal case, and a sword to represent the enforcement of justice. The globe on which Lady Justice stands represents the Mother Earth, and the flowing ribbon around her shoulders represents the sky. Lady Justice is made of bronze. The fountain itself has two bowls from which the fountain water falls, eventually ending in the fountain's large base pool. The water is recycled from the nearby courthouse's air conditioning condensation. The fountain is made of cast iron and is the original J. L. Mott fountain that sculpture Gilbert Barrera restored after it was damaged by the 1997 vandalism. The pedestal which supports the middle fountain bowl has four maidens sculpted into it. The pedestal supporting the top bowl under the Lady Liberty has large leaf designes around its center and under the top-most bowl. The total height of the fountain and statue is at least 20 feet from its ground level. Source references came from a Google search for the topic "Lady Justice Fountain, San Antonio, TX."
