In 1846 Sutherlands was one of the first settlements on the Canadian side of the St Clair river. It was described as having a wharf for supplying steamboats with wood, one tavern, one physician and surgeon, a store, two blacksmiths, one shoemaker, one school and a church.

Trinity Church, the first Anglican Church in Lambton County was built in 1841 and lasted until 1881 when it was demolished. The cemetery (where the plaque is located) remains and still appears to be in use although Sutherland’s town and the church are long gone
