Bull Mansion was built in 1876 for Doctor George Bull and his wife Sarah. The home was a wedding gift from Sarah’s father, Daniel B. Wesson, and cost $125,000 to build. The house was designed by Calvert Vaux, a nationally known architect from New York. The mansion is High Victorian Gothic Style and has granite exterior, a high-pitched roof, and dormers. Worcester’s commercial district began to expand in the early twentieth century and Pearl Street became a much less pleasing place to reside. In 1912, the mansion was sold to the Grand Army of the Republic, which was an association for veterans of the Civil War, and called G.A.R. Memorial Hall. Then in the thirty’s its ownership was assigned to the City of Worcester to provide as a memorial for veterans of all wars. The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since February 13, 1975. The mansion is also currently being used a restaurant called, 55 Pearl.
