Hans Kleiber (1887-1967) is of Austrian heritage, but was actually born in Germany while his parents were in Cologne on business. When he was 13 he settled with his parents in Massachusetts. In 1907 he felt the call of the American West and found work in a lumber camp in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. He later found work with the U.S. Forest Service and eventually became a Ranger. Drawn increasingly to art, Kleiber settled in Dayton WY in 1923 and began to pursue a career as an artist.

Starting first with oils, Kleiber soon tried pen and ink and then worked extensively in etchings. He later expanded into watercolors. He was largely self-taught, and his subject matter was primarily the natural world that he had experienced as a Forest Ranger. He also wrote poems and short stories that revealed his love of nature.

Kleiber achieved recognition as an artist during his lifetime and today is considered to be a signature Wyoming artist--not of the stature of William Gollings, but respected and collected nonetheless.

His home and studio still stand in Dayton, and the log cabin studio has been relocated to the middle of town and opened as a museum. The studio is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00 to 6:00 PM during the summer months. Admission is free.
