The Joseph Post Office was established on April 23, 1880. Prior to that the community was known as Silver Lake and Lake City but both of those names were rejected by the Post Office Department so the name Joseph was suggested to honor Chief Joseph (from “Oregon Geographic Names” by McArthur & McArthur). The town was platted in 1883 and had an economy based on agriculture. In 1908, the railroad was completed to Joseph and the timber industry was developed. Today, tourism is the primary economic driver along with three bronze foundries.
