In 1665 Sir John Jacob, of Woodbury Hall, built ten alms houses which form a terrace in red brick of two storeys, each house having a single room on each floor. The houses were built for “poor widows of good character”. At the east end is a brick and tile chapel, probably dating from the early 18th century.

In the centre of the building there is a stone tablet with a shield of arms flanked by two oval windows. The tablet is inscribed

VIVAT obi NATUS
Johannes Jacob
Miles Barotus
ANo DONi
1665
Year of construction: 1665

Full inscription:
VIVAT obi NATUS Johannes Jacob Miles Barotus ANo DONi 1665
