The fountain stones are blue granite, South Carolina's state stone. They were mined from quarries along the Broad and Congaree rivers for construction of Cell Block One of the South Carolina State Penitentiary ca. 1868-1886. Cell Block One and most of the other buildings were demolished after the department of corrections closed the penitentiary in 1994. the stones were donated to Riverbanks Zoo, which provided them to the Leadership Columbia class of 2000 for construction of the fountain.
