The building was built by a local builder, Mr T.L. Gimson. Work started on the building on 21st August 1879 and the school opened on 26th November 1879.
The school was designed to accommodate 200 pupils. The pupils were separated into two groups – the infants separated into three classrooms and a single large classroom for the older children.
The building became the Royston and District Museum in April 1984.
